Safety

What are the safety considerations for automatic gates?

Please see ourRegulations section of the website to find out more about the safety regulations for automatic gates.

The Health and Safety Executive have issued the following notice on the fitting and maintaining of automatic gates, http://www.hse.gov.uk/safetybulletins/electricgates.htm if however this does not answer your question then please do not hesitate to contact us.

What safety features are included in your Electric Gate Store Ltd kits?

As standard our gate automation kits come with a pair of photocell beams, to protect the area between the gates, and stop the gates from operating in the event of an obstruction. You may require a second set of photocells if you have large gates or a short drive.

Most of our TAU gate kits also come with a flashing lights which can be installed on the gate itself or a gate pier or post.

A full range of extra safety devices are available on our site: Safety Edges & Controllers

What if I am delayed and the automatic gates start to close before I am through the entrance?

Included in each of the Electric Gate Store Ltd kits are a pair of safety photocells (otherwise known as magic eyes) that can be mounted on each gate post. If your vehicle (or any person, animal or object) breaks this beam, the gate will either not move or if the gate has already started to close, it will stop moving and reverse open again. If you have large or deep gates then we would advise for an additional pair of safety photocells to be fitted on posts just beyond the leading edges of the open gate. These will protect the full radial sweep of the gate. More information on our photocells is available on our site:Safety Photocells

How would I stop the gate/s closing on a vehicle or a pedestrian?

All of our Systems include 1 x Pair of Photocells which project an infra red beam. Should the beam be broken by for example a car or pedestrians the gates will automatically return to their 'open' position.

Flexible safety edging is also available and can be attached to the edge of the gate. If the gate impacts then the switch in the safety edging will contact and stop the gate instantly. If you have a specific concern about safety, talk to us, and let us find a solution together.

What is an underground exit loop?

An underground exit loop (otherwise known as underground sensor) is a loop of wire placed under the driveway and is connected to a loop detector in the gates electronic control box. When a vehicle drives over the loop, it is sensed by the detector, which then opens the gate automatically. For more information please see:Loop Detectors

Install

Who can install gate automation equipment?

Gate automation can be installed by a professional installer or a competent person. Installations need to comply with BS EN12635 and EN12453 to help you comply with this standard please seeRegulations section of our website.

Are automatic gate systems difficult to install?

One of the reasons why we recommend TAU Automation so much is because the kits and operators are so simple to install. They work very well without being over complicated.

We have an excellent Technical Service, to help you with your install, should you experience any minor difficulties. Please call ourTechnical Support .

If you're looking for a company to install the gate automation for you please seeNeed an installer? our section of the website.

Can any type of gate/s be automated?

With so many gate automation kits available, it is highly likely we will have an automation system suitable for you. Please contact us now to discuss your gate automation needs and we'll get back to you ASAP with our advice on what gate automation kit will be right for you and your gate.

What cabling will I need?

If you are unsure of what type of cable you will require for the installation of your automatic gate system, please contact us now and our friendly team should be able to assist you.

Can any automation system be set up so that my gate/s closes automatically without having to re-press my remote control or access control?

Yes. This is known as a "Fully-Automatic" set-up, where once the Gate/s has been opened, it will automatically close on a controlled timer.

"Semi- Automatic" set up is the alternative option, where once the Gate/s has been opened, you will have to press a key on your Remote Control or Access Control system to close the Gate/s. We strongly recommend you purchase an extra pair of Photocells if you require the "Fully-Automatic" set-up for safety on exit.

I live in an area where we have strong winds. Will this affect my gates or the automation I have to fit?

A closed panel gate will be affected significantly by the wind, whereas an open pattern gate will offer little wind resistance. Imagine trying to hold on to a 6ft square panel in gusty conditions. This sail effect warrants an upgrade in equipment specified and may require the addition of an electronic lock. Call us for advice or click here to contact us now.

Access

Will I need an access control system?

Not necessarily. The reason for selecting one of our Access Control Systems is for convenience and security.

When the gate is closed, how do visitors let me know that they are there and how do they gain access?

The most popular option is to have a wireless bell or a two way intercom at the gate. Please contact us to discuss what option would suit you best or please view our intercom systems that are available: Intercoms

What about disabled access?

Were here to listen, but we do provide advice and specialised products to aid disabled access. Features such as battery backup and pedestrian access are available, as well as cordless door phones

How does the postman deliver, once my automatic gates are in place?

If there is no other pedestrian entrance, then you have the option of a separate post box (on the gate or external wall) or you could install a timer on to the gate to allow access to trade during working hours. Please remember, that the Royal Mail have right of access to your property so you must factor this in when thinking about automating your gate system. If you need further advice of allowing trade into your property via your electronic gate system, please contact us

Remotes

Can the gates be opened from the warmth and security of my car?

Absolutely, yes! All of the Electric Gate Store Ltd kits are designed to be opened via a small key fob sized radio transmitter. The transmitter sends a coded radio signal to a radio receiver (which is integrated into the gates electronic control unit.) Each kit is supplied with two transmitters. Extra transmitters are available from our accessories page:Remote Controls

What range have the transmitters got?

The range of most transmitters is usually about 20m, but it varies depending on the site conditions. The range can be extended by means of an extended aerial:Radio Receivers . If you need advice on your automatic gate, please feel free to contact us

What are the extra buttons on the transmitter for?

To avoid you having to carry around a pile of different transmitters for your own remote control devices, these buttons may be programmed to open a second gate, a garage door or even outside lighting. Obviously, each extra device will need an additional radio receiver wired into it. Please feel free to contact us to discuss your electric gate project.

Operators

Electro- Hydraulic or Electro-Mechanical?

Electro-hydraulic gate equipment is generally designed for a higher duty cycle and is suitable for busy entrances and prestige gates. Hydraulic gate operators are fully serviceable and if properly maintained, will give many years of reliable service.

Electro-mechanical gate equipment is generally designed for the domestic user and has a duty cycle which suits family residences and entrances that are not busy throughout the day. Electro-mechanical systems are generally robust and reliable with a life span of 6-8 years.

Which type of operator?

Underground operators are undoubtedly the most aesthetically pleasing and generally the more expensive option. If the gates are required to open 180 degrees it is in fact the only type of automation that can be used. Drainage is essential; water ingress can be a potential problem. Please see:Underground Operators

Gate mounted swing gate operators are generally a more cost effective way of automating your driveway gates, with the drive pistons mounted on the back of each gate leaf. Please see:Swing Gate Arm Operators

Sliding gate operators are installed when the entrance has side room but does not have the space for swing gates to open. Ranges of models are available to cope with all styles of sliding gates. Please see:Sliding Gate Operators

I need the gate to open 180 degrees. Is this possible?

We would suggest for you to purchase an underground operator kit with a 180 degree opening. Alternatively, have you considered installing a sliding gate system? Please call us to discuss your security options.

What happens when there is a power cut?

All of the Electric Gate Store operators have an emergency release system, where a special key is used to disengage the gate motor gear and allow the gate to be opened manually. External manual release operators are now available for some of the TAU gate automation openers.
